Chapter 4: The Rules of His World
Flashback
"You are not allowed to leave your room without permission."
The words echoed through Aria's mind long after the guard had spoken them.
She stood frozen in the center of the luxurious bedroom, staring at the locked door.
This wasn't a marriage.
This wasn't even a partnership.
It was a prison.
And Rafael Knight held the key.
Present
Aria barely slept.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the contract.
The black ink.
Her trembling signature.
The look in Rafael's eyes when he told her her old life was over.
Morning sunlight spilled through the curtains, but it did little to warm the cold knot in her stomach.
For a few moments, she remained in bed, staring at the ceiling.
Maybe if she stayed there long enough, she'd wake up from this nightmare.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Before she could answer, the door opened.
A woman entered carrying a tray.
Coffee.
Fruit.
Pastries.
The scent alone made Aria realize she hadn't eaten properly since yesterday.
"Good morning, Mrs. Knight."
The title made her stomach twist.
"I'm not hungry."
The woman offered a polite smile.
"Mr. Knight instructed us to make sure you eat."
Aria laughed bitterly.
"Of course he did."
Everything was an instruction.
Everything was controlled.
The woman placed the tray on the table and left.
The moment the door shut, Aria jumped out of bed.
She marched straight toward the exit.
The handle turned.
This time, the door opened.
Her eyes widened.
It wasn't locked.
Without wasting another second, she stepped into the hallway.
Freedom.
Or at least the illusion of it.
The mansion was eerily quiet.
She walked cautiously, taking in every detail.
Massive paintings.
Marble floors.
Security cameras hidden in corners.
The place was beautiful.
And terrifying.
Halfway down the corridor, she spotted a staircase.
Hope flickered inside her chest.
Maybe she could find a phone.
An exit.
Something.
Anything.
She hurried downstairs.
The grand entrance hall was empty.
For the first time since meeting Rafael, she felt like she might actually have a chance.
Then she heard a voice.
"Going somewhere?"
Her heart nearly stopped.
Rafael stood near the fireplace.
A black suit.
A cup of coffee.
A calm expression.
As if he had been waiting for her all morning.
Aria hated how handsome he looked.
She hated herself even more for noticing.
"I was exploring."
"Exploring?"
His eyebrow lifted.
"Interesting choice of words."
"I'm not your prisoner."
The silence that followed was dangerous.
Rafael slowly placed his coffee cup down.
"No?"
Aria immediately regretted speaking.
But she refused to back down.
"No."
He took a step forward.
Then another.
Every movement was controlled.
Deliberate.
The kind of confidence that came from a man who had never lost.
"And what exactly would you call someone who tried to run away yesterday?"
Heat rushed to her cheeks.
"I wasn't running."
"Of course."
His voice dripped with sarcasm.
Aria clenched her fists.
"Why are you like this?"
For the first time, Rafael looked genuinely surprised.
"Like what?"
"Cold."
The word escaped before she could stop it.
"Controlling."
Another step.
"Distant."
Another.
"You act like people are things you can own."
Something changed in his expression.
It lasted less than a second.
But she saw it.
Pain.
Then it vanished.
Replaced by ice.
"People disappoint you when you give them choices."
Aria stared at him.
That wasn't the answer she expected.
Not even close.
Before she could ask what he meant, another voice interrupted them.
"Boss."
A man entered the room.
Tall.
Sharp suit.
Dangerous eyes.
The same man she'd seen briefly at the wedding.
Luca.
"There's a problem."
Rafael's entire demeanor shifted instantly.
The room seemed colder.
"What happened?"
"The shipment was attacked."
Aria frowned.
Shipment?
Rafael's jaw tightened.
"Casualties?"
"Three."
Silence.
Deadly silence.
Luca continued.
"We think Dante Moretti is behind it."
The name meant nothing to Aria.
But Rafael's reaction did.
His eyes darkened.
The atmosphere became suffocating.
"Dante is getting careless."
Luca smirked.
"Or brave."
"No."
Rafael's voice was quiet.
Dangerously quiet.
"Brave men survive."
A pause.
"Careless men don't."
A chill ran down Aria's spine.
For the first time, she wasn't hearing rumors about Rafael Knight.
She was seeing the real man.
The Mafia King.
The one people feared.
The one capable of making grown men tremble.
And somehow...
She was married to him.
Later that evening, Aria stood on the balcony outside her room.
The sun was setting.
Painting the sky orange and gold.
For a brief moment, everything looked peaceful.
Normal.
Then she noticed movement below.
Several black vehicles pulled through the gates.
Guards immediately moved into position.
Something was happening.
Something important.
Curiosity got the better of her.
She slipped out of her room and headed downstairs.
The mansion was buzzing with tension.
Staff moved quickly.
Guards checked weapons.
Weapons.
Her stomach dropped.
At the end of the hallway, Rafael stood speaking with Luca.
His expression was unreadable.
Until his gaze landed on her.
Instantly.
Like he always knew exactly where she was.
"What are you doing here?"
The question wasn't harsh.
But it wasn't welcoming either.
"I heard the cars."
Rafael looked toward the entrance.
Then back at her.
"You should be upstairs."
"I wanted to know what's happening."
A muscle in his jaw tightened.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Finally—
"Go."
Aria frowned.
"What?"
"Upstairs."
"I'm not a child."
"No."
His eyes locked onto hers.
"You're a liability."
The words hit harder than she expected.
Before she could respond, the front doors opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the mansion.
Someone had arrived.
And judging by the tension in the room...
whoever it was could change everything.
